The country’s oldest zoo has made history with Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman, who became its first Black woman CEO and president.

Mogerman started her job at the Philadelphia Zoo on October 30, but since her appointment was announced in August, she claims to have received an abundance of support.

She added, “I think I have also felt and seen this additional sense of pride with Black and Brown communities.” The little head nod we give each other on the inside. I will make sure that we are represented, and I wear that with pride.

The country’s oldest zoo has made history with Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman , who became its first Black woman CEO and president.

Mogerman took over as head of the Philadelphia.

According to Mogerman, she wants to instill a passion for conservation and a love of animals in the zoo’s visitors.

According to her, diverse perspectives and skills are needed at the table when it comes to the intersections of animal conservation, visitor experience, and community.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Philadelphia Zoo team, and I have an amazing Board that understands the significance and worth of that,” the woman exclaimed.

Novel Findings

As per Joanna McNeil Lewis, the Chair of the Board of Directors at the Philadelphia Zoo, the organization started a nationwide search for a new CEO at the start of the year.

Lewis stated that Mogerman was the best candidate for president because of more than just her wealth of experience.

“Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman was the ideal fit for our esteemed Zoo because of her unwavering dedication to the community, animal welfare, staff development, and operational excellence,” Lewis stated.

The first zoo in the country was founded in 1874 and is located in Philadelphia. More than 1700 rare and endangered animals call it home at the moment.

In the previous 149 years, Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman’s predecessors have been limited to 14.

She remarked, “I’m truly humbled to be in charge of this organization.” “I am looking after this zoo for Philadelphia; it’s not Jo-Elle’s.”

Learning how to navigate the 42-acre zoo campus is the first thing Mogerman said she has on her agenda.

“I frequently get lost,” she said. “But that’s alright, I don’t mind getting lost because it’s a learning experience.”

Mogerman claimed that even though she’s still getting to know the area, she has already discovered the home of her favorite animal: cheetahs.

The eight-year-old cheetah sisters Amani and Kalima live at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman said that she was always drawn to the beauty of spotted cats as a young Black child growing up in the 1970s and that she appreciated the fact that the cats have historically been connected to African culture and royalty.

The new CEO told CNN that although she loves cheetahs, she is an animal lover in general.

Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman encouraged Americans to “go visit their local zoo, go take a hike in nature, get re-grounded, get reconnected” in light of the complex political and cultural environment in the US.

Despite the historical dominance of White people in the zoo and aquarium industries, Mogerman noted that she has seen a change in the demographics since she began her career.

She told CNN, “Over time, there have been more women appointed in these top leadership positions.” “We have work to do in terms of racial and ethnic diversity.”

Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman is only the second woman of African American descent to be appointed as the director of an organization accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Denise Verret took the helm as the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens’ first Black female director in 2019.

In her new role at the Philadelphia Zoo, Mogerman stated that she intends to continue being true to herself and intentionally visible in order to uplift the next generation.

“Being something you can’t see is really difficult,” Mogerman remarked. “It should assist a wide range of individuals in realizing that some progress has been made.”
